I went out with family the other day but guess what? I came back with stretched nerves. HEAPS OF WASTE was the only reason to make my “Fun day” a “Dull day.” The growing population produces a large amount of waste that ended up like this if not properly managed. The rapid growth of the population has increased the amount of waste generated each year. Moreover, industrialization introduced chemicals and new materials and dramatically changed the composition of the material. In the year 2020, almost 2 billion tons of waste produced in the world. What are we to do with all this trash?

Waste comprises household waste, agricultural waste, e-waste, hazardous chemicals, and nuclear waste. Variation in the composition of waste requires different management procedures. A sustainable waste management system must utilize all materials to minimize the impact. Waste contributes to a large proportion of greenhouse gas emissions that leads to global warming. To overcome these challenges, waste management companies are rethinking strategies to handle the mountains of trash. This article will cover futuristic waste management technologies. But before that, let’s learn how to manage the waste and convert it into valuable products. Waste can be converted into valuable products by recycling and converting it into energy. Recycling of waste recover valuable metals from waste and give them a second life. These metals – platinum, copper, palladium, and iridium – are reused in the automotive sector and electronics. Management of agriculture waste through composting or its conversion into biogas through engineered plants efficiently reduces the emissions. Moreover, the metals also recovered from hazardous and biological waste. Since packaging material, I.e. plastic is hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon. By plasma gasification, this plastic is converted into syngas that can be used as a clean fuel. A study has shown that plasma gasification could remove 83 million tons of carbon dioxide in California per year.

Certain technologies have made the management of waste an easy task. Management technologies can track the trash and make people aware of how much waste they’re producing each day. Collecting trucks are usually fueled by coal or oil, so they produce emissions.

Smart waste containers automatically recognize the type of waste, sort it, and compress it automatically. Self-sorting waste bin notifies the company when it’s full. So, optimize the collection routes and improve the efficiency of fuel. Garbage bins have screens to guide people towards better waste management.

7 – Trash Compactor:

The solar-powered trash Compactor has a sensor that monitors the filling capacity of bins. A compactor bin can hold at least eight times more waste than a non-compressor bin. In this way, it reduced the collection frequency up to 80 percent.

8 – Modern Trash Dumps:

Waste emits poisonous gases that negatively impact the environment and ultimately affect human health. Waste management industries have modernized the trash dumps.  Engineered landfills ensure the protection of human health and the environment. Integration of geomembrane with solar panels produces sustainable energy and cuts down the emissions as well. Industries require the use of metals, but extraction becomes costly and produces emissions. Recycling is a popular practice in industries to recover valuable materials from waste. Thermal cracking is usually employed to recycle the material such as plastic and e-waste. The development of single-stream recycling has reduced the sorting burden on people. This will improve the rate of recycling as well as emissions. However, some materials cannot vet recycled, such as multilayer films and fibres. So, they ended up as waste. 3R plays an important role in the management of waste. But it does not help in achieving the goals of waste management.

We are producing a large amount of waste each day. Every year, billions of tons of waste ended up in landfills and water bodies. This affects not only humans’ health but also their environment. Waste collection operations need to be adapted to meet the needs of growing cities. Waste management companies develop innovative technologies to make this process efficient. Waste to energy and waste recycling are two standard practices around the world. Smart waste containers, modernized trash dumps, and automatic trash collectors are some management technologies that make the process less laborious. Although the first step is to reduce waste production, these technologies have promising impacts on the environment.
